Opera and opulent robes – A glimpse behind the scenes
Barbara Gruber and her husband Hugo are passionate opera fans. Whenever time allows, they visit theaters and festivals. Almost 20 years ago, their path led them to Immling. What they saw there deeply impressed them.
From the request for sponsorship in the speech of the artistic director Ludwig Baumann,
she felt addressed and so she drove a few days later
to the estate. "Where can I find Mr. Baumann," she asked
herself. The beginning of a long-lasting friendship and
collaboration. Because Barbara Gruber runs the Gewandhaus Gruber in
Erding. A family business whose roots go back to the year 1657
And on stage, clothing is always needed.
Barbara Gruber emphasizes that she is not a trained costume designer and also not a stage person. She prefers to be in the background. But she has a sense of what suits people. That is the most important thing when running a clothing store. With each production, she engages intensively with the respective piece. She is in close contact with the director. She selects dresses, skirts, pants, suits. Then the soloists come to Erding and try them on. What does not fit the participants is adjusted in the in-house tailor shop.
She has already outfitted the soloists of "La Boheme", "The Flying Dutchman", "Brandner Kaspar" or "Carmina Burana", as well as dressed the festival choir. And this year, "Manon Lescaut."
After the performances, the costumes go into the stock and eventually reappear in other productions. Barbara Gruber is delighted to immerse herself in music from everyday life. Because in opera, she says, the whole world is contained. Love, jealousy, power, morality....
Only a few weeks left until the clothing from Gewandhaus Gruber can be seen on Immling's stage.
